2020-08-30 12:18 pmHmm. File corruption on (laptop)Sable, political corruption (a given these days), some interesting debugging on (temporary replacement laptop) Raven, singing, no walking to speak of, Colleen doing her exercises, Colleen's usual medical problems and some less usual ones, deli sandwiches by curbside pickup, killer hurricane, killer cops,... FSCK (literally as well as indirectly figuratively).
Oh yeah, almost forgot -- C.D.C. Now Says People Without Covid-19 Symptoms Do Not Need Testing (via siderea | How Can You Tell the CDC is Lying? Their Lips Are Moving.)
The usual mixed week, here at this end of the Rainbow Caravan.
0823Su * Up 5:40; / 5:45 major cleanup % back pain, still about the same. @ How starving public health fueled a COVID fire in Florida @ 'Hoax' book reveals extent of internal unease at Fox " This story is about a rot at the core of our politics [...] It’s about an ongoing attack on the very idea of a free and fair press. It’s about the difference between news and propaganda. It’s about the difference between state media and the fourth estate. " @ AP EXCLUSIVE: US faces back-to-school laptop shortage : power indicator seems to have vanished from gnome-panel. Hopefully back on restart -> restart not only didn't help, gnome won't come up at all. Ubuntu does... * Walk: to Skybird. So not a bad start for the week. : sable is having disk problems. It's an SSD, too. Weird. Now on Raven, which hopefully will hold up for a while. I was able to check in and push everything under vv, so (thanks be to git) I have almost all my state. The dual monitor setup on Raven is extremely weird, though. : next step is back up everything in ~ on sable except for caches and vv, and go from there. fsck from an external drive, and if that doesn't work replace it. Raven doesn't have bluetooth :P. Probably not 802-11a either. * call Mom 7:15ish. She's really having memory problems : best guess as to what went wrong with Sable's disk is not mounting it with noatime. lazyatime and relatime maybe. Of course, I got it used... % meloxicam 10:30 0824Mo % dream fragments. Some kind of event that involved sessions in an auditorium. N was there. Ended with a buffet banquet that I missed most of because I was with N, but there were leftovers -- roasted chicken (Rock Cornish hens?) and make-it-yourself nigiri. Mostly squid and nori left. * Up 5:45; S=6:31; @ Arkham Board of Health Feedback On Miskatonic University’s Draft Plan for a Safe Campus Reopening : Weird. charm isn't charming. And I can't post from Sable, either. Got a "too many failed logins" error before I pulled .charmrc (with API key) from sable, but it still doesn't work. Maybe I need a new key? -> that doesn't work either. -> test post via charm on raven worked. So??? -> not, apparently, a problem with direct posting, so maybe a bug in charm or the API ->> subject too long. Then it retrys, and never reports the error :P * Singing: World Inside the Crystal * Home Health - Diane. Will get a urine sample. (should have been done in the ER, should have been done when the catheter was last changed, ...) -> catheter change (0824) * 1:40 C Dr. Rochier video @ A Tale Of Two Ecosystems: On Bandcamp, Spotify And The Wide-Open Future : NPR also a tale of two business models " Spotify's royalty rates are so low that to earn a living wage of $15 an hour, a musician needs 657,895 streams per month " " Bandcamp may not just be the anti-Spotify; it may be operating in an entirely different world. I asked Diamond what digital businesses he feels a kinship with now, the way he did with blogging services when he started the company. He didn't name a music platform. 'I would say Etsy. [...] it's a marketplace, right. They connect buyers and sellers, but they're not trying to create competing goods.' Started a little after 8pm -> done 9ish; multiply-claimed blocks, mostly in /swapfile -> started another run 10ish. A few dozen corrupted files -- surprising anything worked at all. Not clear how one recovers from that. Clean re-install, probably, and I wonder whether I can trust the drive. Finished ~10:30; no problems (but no telling which files are borked.) * meloxicam 0826We & up 4ish; S=6:33; woken by C / major cleanup. Date: 2020-09-01 09:26 am (UTC)Here in the UK more lockdown restrictions are being eased, including reopening schools, despite public unease over that move. My sister was still trying to figure out how she's supposed to teach her class of kids safely, and protect herself as well. I have a horrible feeling that there'll be a second wave of Covid-19 infections soon, just as the government here pulls away what little support it was offering to those most impacted by the pandemic. And then we'll be out of the European Union at end of the year, most likely without any new trade deals in place. Ugh!
