Bad week. Continuing the trend set last week, the filk community lost Lindy Laurant. Meanwhile what used to be a free country continues its descent into theocratic dictatorship with kleptocracy. Colleen's nausea and diarrhea also continued, though somewhat improved over the previous two weeks. The USB connector on my old Thinkpad keyboard died while I was in the process of moving the cable to its replacement. Poor little Cygnus suffered a tea spill, so I ordered a replacement keyboard.

It's a good thing that I keep spare laptops in the house. (I'm always happy to take unwanted computers off your hands.) It's a good thing that I don't actually need Bluetooth to work on Sable.

The week to come isn't likely to be any better.

: S managed to spill tea on her laptop (Cygnus). Moved documents over to Raven via an

    wasn't strictly necessary but convenient.)
~ 4pm Ruddygore -> came in in the middle; stupid Sable doesn't seem able to output audio
to the DP. I'm almost certain it was doing that before, but...
-> using Sherman on my desk, which is a perfectly good working environment.
-> not that I actually got anything done

: Blueman seems to be working; 15min or so so far. There's still an indicator from
Blueberry; not sure what to do about that. Recovering from a cat-initiated crash

  * order replacement kbd for Cygnus -> arr. 0928
: the older thinkpad keyboard broke in a very odd way -- the USB connector broke, with
the little plastic tongue coming off in the plug. Might be hard to fix. Can

  * creating a 20.04 usb key. Mint/MATE's disk manager sucks. Works perfectly, though.

: HDMI sound _does_ work; you have to pick the right 'profile' for built-in audio
: 3:28 working on mint after uninstalling blueberry, several attempts at pairing; rmmod
btusb; modprobe btusb. we'll see how long that lasts. -> 3:48 nope.
-> "connection failed: I/O error" when attempting to reconnect
  @ Bluetooth - ArchWiki
may need to copy BT pairing keys from other OSs if multibooting.

"Theocractic" doesn't fit. Sure, Trump will play to the religious right when it suits him, but he has no actual interest in religion.

The religious right is overrated as a threat. What I'm seeing is a movement to build a police state, driven by lies and fear. In the past four years the conservative movement has lost all its philosophical foundations. Stoking fear is one thing Trump is good at, and he's backed by outlets such as Breitbart. The insanity of QAnon has reached frightening levels of popularity. People think the elections are rigged, BLM is going to kill them, and their only protection is to take the restraints off armed government force.

I don't think they'll achieve a dictatorship, but there could be ever-increasing levels of civil strife. That's what the leaders are counting on. If people are scared enough, they'll give up their freedom. It's a classic formula.

I feel your despair about the USA. But I take some solace that Trump's bluster about not leaving is just that, and the election result is large enough that even the Supreme Court won't be able to ignore it.

Here in the UK, the confusion and mismanagement of our government over Covid-19 continues, as does the approach of a no-deal exit from the European Union. I have a suspicion that most of the new restrictions being enacted are more to prevent civil unrest in the New Year than to control Coronavirus.

Last time I had to dig out a 32-bit Linux distro was when I wanted to revive an old Dell laptop in the late 2000s — I believe it was Linux Mint Debian Edition — the laptop in question was from 2003 and battle-scarred but usable.
