2021-05-16 04:35 pmWas it a week? It seemed to go by very quickly. Colleen's care team at UW was very good about keeping us updated. She had some unexpected setbacks Thursday, so she's still at UW. But they also started allowing visitors on Thursday -- N took the first visit because I wasn't up for the drive down. I did visit Friday and Saturday, spending the night in between in Seattle. None of that was particularly good for my back.
Unless something else goes wrong, we're expecting to have Colleen back on the island tomorrow afternoon, in the SNF formerly known as "Careage" (and now called Regency Coupeville). Their policy for indoor visits is very restrictive, but they allow more frequent outdoor visits; hopefully they're sheltered because the weather through Wednesday looks a bit dicey.
$writing-project was stalled, except for an hour or so yesterday. Focus? Isn't that something for cameras? I did get a few smaller tasks done, including resurrecting Mom's iMac and iPad. Did very little on those besides scanning the iMac for files of possible interest.
There are medical details in the notes, so you might want to skip them again this week if you find such things triggery. However, you might like: Scientists Have Studied the Mysterious Behavior of Cats Sitting on Squares (it seems that cats not only like to sit in boxes, they sit on squares drawn on the floor, and even on optical illusions that look like squares) and J. Haydn: Symphony No. 60 "Il Distratto" | Giovanni Antonini | Il Giardino Armonico (Haydn2032 live) - YouTube (by way of madfilkentist). The thing I really like about that performance is the way the musicians look like they're up to no good.

* dragged Mom's iMac upstairs to the Box Room. Found kbd and mouse. Need batteries.
% after that + the catboxes I'm a great deal weaker in the legs than I like or expected
* fired up Mom's iMac -- it's from 2011, running Sierra. 4GB of RAM, 500GB SATA drive.
Several different versions of the memoir and supplement. Home Health bills.
/ 4:30ish heard from Colleen's nurse, and followed up with C herself. No PT yet -- on
the schedule for tomorrow(?), but they put a new catheter in, in the right place this
time, and it's working nominally. According to C they will probably have her on TPN
for bowel rest to let the fistula heal. The nurse asked whether she can walk, and I
gave her the usual summary. She still hurts like hell, but it's getting better.
She's been seen by gastroenterology, urology, and I think nephrology; more scheduled
for tomorrow. She's been told that she's a poor candidate for surgery. Which we knew
/ 5:35 Doctor called, basically confirmed all of the above; there's the fistula and also
some other bowel perforation, but that seems to be contained. I asked about H.pylori,
and she's negative for that so all she needs for the ulcer is antacids. She's also
getting bicarbonate for acidosis (which we've seen before). Waiting for blood culture
results to see which additional antibiotics she might need. They can't put in a PICC
or central line for TPN until they've taken care of the blood infection
: N suggested some guitar noodling but otherwise thinks I'm taking decent care of myself
/ called 8:40 or so, crying. She hurts, and she can't color or play games.

~ Colleen wants a bouquet of lilacs. Suggests teleflora or bouqs -> don't have lilacs
Used AX on teleflora.com - Teleflora's Morning Melody - all purple, in a square vase
-> apparently it's not available until tomorrow. The call to tell me that and
reschedule was almost incomprehensible. Maybe it worked.
~ trying to reach Freeland clinic to cancel Colleen's appointment tomorrow; they're not
answering their phone, so sent message to Dr. Dixon via web form.
~ phone survey from WhidbeyHealth Med Center; bungled an answer and left message to call
me. Attempted to log in to _hospital_ portal, but got errors. sent email. Error

/ 1:20 call from (med student on C's care team)Macy - everything going well; they're
expecting the fistula to close on its own, and she sat on the edge of the bed with PT
~ 2pm Colleen Dr. Dixon (check time) -> called to verify that they'd gotten the message,
but their answering machine is still a black hole.

-> bait & switch. The email said "renew your plan for $19/m|199;y", and mentioned 2
other plans (protection and guidance, besides the one (essentials) which I already
had. But the page the buy button took me to had the price as 267/y. The agent I
chatted with determined that the $19 plan was "basic", which does practically
nothing. I renewed my existing plan but intend to raise a bit of a fuss. The main
post will be on DW, but I expect a post on the face place will get more attention.
-> conf. page says to press the blue button to complete it also, saving the

be any _reason_ why they wanted me to press the button, though the agent did
confirm that the plan had been reviewed.

Date: 2021-05-17 09:38 am (UTC)My Mum's 2014 iMac is currently on Mojave and was slow due to its internal hard disk, but now that I've got it running from an external Thunderbolt-powered SSD it has a new lease of life, and I should be able to upgrade it to Big Sur at some point and give it several more years. Eventually, I can see her using an Apple Silicon iMac, which would be just fine for her needs. Mum also has an iPad Mini 2 which is still working fine.
I'm planning on keeping my iPad Mini 4 around for as long as it'll work, but repurpose it as a music player / ebook reader/ radio / meditation device. I'm waiting to see what Apple's plans are for larger iMacs, but my current machine is in good health and plenty powerful so I'm good for now.

Date: 2021-05-17 06:46 pm (UTC)Mom's is mid-2011, running Sierra and not upgradable. So it's newer than my 2009 mini, but not by much. I don't see a use for it right now, but it's the only thing I have that will read her files, some of which I do need. Or want, anyway.
(Insert rant about using dates and code names instead of version numbers.)
The iPad's model is listed as MD510LL/A; I have no idea what code name or short model number that translates to. (I'll have look it up, I suppose.)
ETA: actual model number A1458, which I had to use my phone as a magnifier to read off the back cover. So 4th generation, around 2012.
