It feels like it's been a strange week, albeit in ways I can't really express. Surreal? Partly I guess because of Ukraine, and maybe also because of Texas; there must be something else, though. My sleep has been all over the place - all the way from 5:20 on Sunday to 10:27 on Thursday. And most days I really would have preferred to stay in bed.

As I wrote last Sunday, You know things are bad when you read plague news as an escape from the _really_ bad stuff.

We had some snow on Monday; there was still some on the ground yesterday.

New music is bypassing the 'industry' because artists have worked out that they no longer need its help to reach audiences, and can make more money going direct. The last few decades have seen the major labels fighting every which way to stop the internet from disrupting their gravy train, but it's a war they'll eventually lose. As will the big book publishing houses, movie and TV studios and even games studios (who have disrupted TV and movies, but copies those mediums in exploiting those who create the content.)

Also, a universal distaste for DRM, the decline of radio as a way of introducing new music, and the insistence of the industry on "sure things".

In addition to artists having worked out that they no longer need the industry, fans have come to the same conclusion.
