It occurs to me that I ought to have written a solstice post, so here it is. Such as it is. So here I am...

Wishing everyone who marks the longest night a blessed sun-return. Wishing everyone a happy instance of whatever winter holiday they celebrate. Wishing everyone peace, happiness, good health, and good fortune in the coming year.

Wishing you a happy solstice too!

An odd factoid - the earliest sunset happens earlier in December, while the latest sunrise doesn't occur until early January. (The dates vary with latitude.) Has to do with the length of the observed day (noon to noon) being slightly longer than 24 hours at this time of year. Which has to do with quirks of the earth's orbital mechanics that I find fascinating but kind of tricky to get an intuitive feel for.

Happy Solstice.
