mdlbear: portrait of me holding a guitar, by Kelly Freas (freas)

Finally did some comparative tracks for guitar and vocals with different mics and positions. I'll have to get [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf, who has younger ears, to go over them as well, but the results mostly confirmed my guesses:

The vocals sound best with the CAD large-diaphragm condenser mic, slightly off-axis; the small-diaphragm AKG C1000S works best on the guitar (the CAD sounds a little muffled on guitar, and the AKG is too thin for voice). The Ovation, going direct in, sounds horrible -- there's a twang to it that's really obnoxious. I'll have to try another vocal sample with a tube preamp.

Nice to know I was doing it basically right the first time. Voice does need a windscreen, though, to filter out the pops.

You may want to have both mic and direct plug for the Ovation and fiddle with the mix once a track is laid down. [livejournal.com profile] filker0's Succubus sounds better acoustically, I think, but you don't have to throw out the electronics automatically.
