A strong earthquake occurred at 11:15:56 AM (PST) on Monday, December 22, 2003. The magnitude 6.5 event occurred 11 km (7 miles) NE of San Simeon, CA. The hypocentral depth is 8 km ( 5 miles).

Here in San Jose (120-odd miles away) I felt a rocking motion for about half a minute; I wasn't immediately certain whether I was in an earthquake or just starting to fall over from hunger.
