Things that go Beep in the night

This morning I tracked down the once-every-few-minutes "beep" that had been called to my attention yesterday: it turned out to have been the old white portable phone bemoaning its lost charge. Since it was sitting on its charging base at the time, nobody had bothered looking closer -- it turned out that some well-meaning person had turned off the power strip it was recently attached to.

Speaking of well-meaning people, I need to mention this evening that I hardly ever look for leftover rice in the refrigerator's meat drawer.

Homeland Security secretary Tom Ridge "has explained to colleagues that he needs to earn money to comfortably put his two children, Tommy Jr. and Lesley, through college, officials said. Both are now teenagers. Ridge earns $175,700 a year as a Cabinet secretary."
