Meanwhile, Microsoft appears to be taking advantage of the day to publicise their "How to Tell" website, which purports to tell you whether you're running "pirated" copies of their software.
As in the old days, some of us prefer to obtain a letter of marque, available from FSF or Creative Commons. (OK, the analogy isn't exact; they're more like safe conduct passes, but these licenses do allow you to take actions otherwise considered "piratical" against the specified works.)
