mdlbear: portrait of me holding a guitar, by Kelly Freas (freas)
No, I don't know why I've had "John Henry" running through my head all afternoon. Totally unrelated to anything, as far as I know.

Damned CD player died this evening. Luckily the DVD player will play just about anything that fits in the tray and spins. It's basically impossible to find 1-disk CD players anymore, so I'm not going to bother. Temporary fix is a couple of cables between the TV island and the audio corner. Later on I'll move a computer in there; computer CD drives are dirt cheap and just plain work.

Spent the morning looking for a West Bend "multi-purpose cooker" that's gotten good reviews, and turned up most recently in a J.C.Penney's catalog. Turns out it's not at the store; catalog only. The store's at a mall, Vallco, that was great a decade or two ago and has been going downhill ever since. The anchor stores (Penney's, Macy's, and Sears) are still there, but almost everything else has either changed hands or just closed up. Practically deserted. Since it was raining, I took a second walk from end to end just for the exercise. I prefer the bike path by the creek.

The afternoon was more productive; took the [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat's van out and picked up a Rubbermaid lawn cart -- I had the sneaking suspicion it wouldn't fit in my Honda Civic. After that, a stop for gas -- Colleen can't easily handle the self-service pump, so it's cheaper if I do it.

That put me next to a little Japanese strip-mall where I bought a new rice cooker, a belated anniversary present for the house. Our old 5-cup one (bought in the same store) had served us well for many years (I forget just how many), but the teflon coating was flaking off the bowl, and it was past time to retire it. Wound up with the high-end Sanyo 10-cup for about $150. Could have gotten one that was on sale for about $40 cheaper but it didn't do as much, and it was ugly.

Came home to find that the iced-tea maker had croaked (flooding the kitchen counter in the process) -- they tend to last about 2 years. That was our 6th.

Did a little work on my "Collected Works" web page, but it needs a lot more. More on that tomorrow, I hope.
