You may possibly remember this post from June 29, where I describe a cute little USB MP3 Pen + FM Radio + Voice Recorder that I ordered for $49. It arrived this morning, in a cute little metal box, complete with charger (USB interface), USB extension cable, a pair of (white with chrome trim) earbuds, and a small CD-R disk.

It's charging now. The controls are spartan, of course, and there's no display, but I wasn't expecting either. It looks to the OS like a floppy drive: there's no partition table, just a single VFAT (Windows 98) filesystem.

Happy geek. Oh, yeah: see the userpic for what it looks like.

Linux.com | Collaborative text editing with Gobby

Looks interesting; available for Debian (Etch), Ubuntu, FC5 and Gentoo. There's apparently emacs support as well. Uses zeroconf, so it'll work on ad-hoc wireless nets.

Microsoft ends support for Windows 98 | The Register

So Microsoft is ending support (and security updates) for Win98, 98SE, and ME. Leaving users with four choices: keep using it and take their chances, try to upgrade (spending $100 to upgrade a machine that's probably not worth more than $75 by now and probably doesn't have nearly enough horsepower for XP), replace the machine altogether, or switch to Linux.

Most consumers will probably keep using Win98 until their machine dies of bitrot; the corporate users will pick one of the other two. I'm guessing that enough will opt to keep their old machines and switch to Linux to be noticable.

Or at least I can hope so.

The interesting thing is that I have three of the most popular 100 on my flist. Or maybe that's not so interesting after all.
