R.I.P. central.thestarport.org
2005-03-10 08:50 pmMy oldest server (parts go back to 1997) finally croaked last night -- it looks as though one its '98-vintage Seagate Hawk SCSI drives died. It was running RedHat 5.2, and was last rebooted 183 days ago according to its last report. Stupid thing is that I knew that that drive was flaky, and was somewhere in the middle of moving things off of it. And the machine has been at the top of my "replace me" list for over a year now...
Since the news spool was on the other drive, it's probably OK; news needed an overhaul anyway. (In fact, one reason I hadn't upgraded in so long is that there were major changes in

inn and I just didn't want to face having to re-learn all that insanity.) The other main function of central was to dial in to my ISP and pull down, not only news, but any mail that didn't make it to the server on my DSL line. But since my static dial-in IP address is going away soon, that's probably not much of a problem either.(much later, having noticed that I hadn't posted it this morning...)
