I've been enjoying peoples' answers to the "five questions" meme, but I'm not really very good at asking questions of other people. Feel free to fire away in the comments, and I'll respond in a separate post. There's nothing sacred about the number five, either.

Just to get things started, you needn't ask any of the following FAQ's:

1. Who the heck are you, anyway? Steve Savitzky. It's in my user profile.
2. What are your kids' LJ usernames? chaoswolf and super_star_girl (AKA the Younger Daughter). The flower_cat is my wife.
3. What the heck is that weird user icon? The "Mandelbear Set" is the set of complex numbers z₀ with a positive imaginary component such that z_n+1 = z_n³ + z₀ is bounded. The better-known "Mandelbrot Set" uses z_n².
4. How long have you been on the Net? The Arpanet saw its first packets in October of 1969, at which point I was already a computer science grad student at Stanford. The AI Lab's IMP was installed in '71 or '72, if I remember correctly. Just to set the record straight, TCP/IP packets weren't sent using carrier pigeons until 2001.
5. What did SOS stand for? Son of Stopgap, my hacked-up version of the Stopgap text editor on SAIL's PDP-10.
6. When is your album coming out? When it's ready. In time for Consonance. (Hopefully the next Consonance, but...)

I'll admit that I assumed it was either a zoomed-in area of the Mandelbrot (one of the ones that contains a "baby-brot"), or else the full set with the aspect ratio screwed with. It's kinda hard to see, in the 100x100 pixel size.
