Sunday update
2005-04-25 08:18 amWell, not much got done on Sunday, out of what I'd planned. Had a good walk in the morning, then did a little shopping: Peet's for coffee, and Central Computing for an Antec SLK3700BQE case, which I've had my eye on for a long time as a case for the main household server.
Antec's BQE suffix stands for "Black, Quiet Edition" -- most of their quiet have plastic doors over the drive bays, a 120mm (large, slow, and quiet) rear case fan mounted on silicone-rubber spacers, and rubber vibration-isolation mounts for the hard drives. The 3700 has four trays for the 3.5" drives that slide out to the side, making it particularly easy to work on.
I also have a Sonata case, very like the 3700 but with only three 5.25" bays (presently in the bedroom for use as the recording machine), and an SLK2500BQE (with only two hard-drive slots) that will eventually become the new firewall/router/web server).
The plan is to use the new replace
While there I also picked up a very cool-looking Vantec USB hard-drive enclosure, not so much for its looks as the facts that it was small and fanless. (Unlike the old one, which was bulky, plastic, and noisy.)
In the afternoon, went out for a drive with the
flower_cat -- the Sunday afternoon drive seems to be turning into a family tradition, but it does mean that less gets done. It's good, though, to get out of the house for a couple of hours without the kids, for a little quiet time together.
In the evening, I disassembled a couple of old computer cases, and spent altogether too much time trying to squeeze the faster of the two motherboards into the smaller case, where it didn't quite fit. :-P OK, scratch that idea.
Finally, this morning, did a little work on the Albums directory, just so that the link on my evolving main page won't be broken.

nova, the main internal file server. In the process I will probably upgrade to at least a 1GHz CPU, freeing nova's 500MHz CPU for use as the new firewall. While there I also picked up a very cool-looking Vantec USB hard-drive enclosure, not so much for its looks as the facts that it was small and fanless.
