Replacing the power supply with a known-quiet one helps, but only a little. Evidently most of the noise is coming from the CPU fan. Grumble. Also having trouble getting printing to work; administering XP is a nightmare, and the on-line help is no help at all. Never got printers or shares connected from [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf's laptop, either.

XP Home does not want to connect to anything other then other XP systems. If Chaos' system is runing 95/98/2000/samba, XP Home will not see it, you have to connect via ip addres and it still might not see it.

XP Home is specifically designed to be crippled when it comes to interactivity with network resources - it sounds like you're running into this. If this is the case, there is no solution (other than buying XP Professional, formatting the drive, and reinstalling the system).

This is the reason that XP Home is $100 cheaper than XP Professional - it's broken by design.
