Since I have a business trip coming up this Tuesday, and since I've gotten tired of manoevering a backpack around, I've decided to try a rolling briefcase. Got a Travelpro at Macy's for $99 -- it was the last one they had of that model. There was a Samsonite at a comparable price with some good features, but it didn't have the option of a shoulder strap. And I've always been happy with Travelpro. Don't look at me like that -- it's cheaper than Tumi!
Meanwhile, I've finally gotten networked printing to work on the
flower_cat's new machine. Apart from figuring out which ports to open in the Windows firewall, the other important thing is making sure there's a Samba server on the same subnet as the XP box. Since I was wanting a small server for other risky activities, like dialout and DHCP, it seemed like the obvious place for it. flare, as in a flare star, which is dimmer than a nova, our main server these days) is the one I replaced when I got Colleen the new XP machine. It's more than I needed, but it works and isn't quite as power-hungry as any of the alternatives I had ready to hand. Eventually I ought to replace the two edge systems (flare and gateway) with Mini-ITX or something else lightweight.
