Six layers of it, in some places. The head painter told me, as I was leaving for work this morning, not to let it go twenty years between paint jobs next time. I told him he'd be hearing from us in no more than a decade.

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, I can heartily recommend our house painters, a company with the unlikely name of Deep Purple, in Campbell. Their bid came in about 1/3 less than the other company we got a bid from, and the results are gorgeous. It's the same brand of paint and the same color scheme as we had before, but the professional prep-job (power wash, scrape, sand, fill, and prime) makes a difference that has to be seen to be appreciated.

Tomorrow morning the guy from Repipe Specialists comes to schedule ripping out our 80-year-old rusty water pipes and replacing them with copper.

Exactly. I too have seen what a difference a proper prep job makes.

Copper? Did you ask them, or did they inform you, about Aquapex? It's been used in Europe for 25 years. Can be a bit tricky to install, but it's both temp and pressure resilient, *and* can be bent (with proper special tools)... thus resulting in far fewer joints in the system.

Fwiw, my 1910 house was completely re-plumbed with it (upstairs bathroom, main floor kitchen, basement laundry sink and washing machine), in a single weekend.
