Macs just rock. I had no clue how much until I had an eMac for a desktop working for my previous employer. If it didn't already run as a native Mac app, I just dragged the source over from Linux and did the standard ./configure && make && make install (with the installer pointed at $HOME/bin)... and for the most part it Just Worked.

Did you see Cringely this morning? Rumors of OS X for standard Wintel hardware. Be afraid, Bill. Be very afraid. OS X preloaded on generic machines in CompBigBox are coming.... it might not be as good for us Penguinistas, but it'll be good for the industry.

I've dropped three powerbooks, a Duo, a powerbook G3 "pismo", and a titanium. One of them fell onto a concrete floor. All survived with their displays intact, and they booted after I fetched their respective batteries, and CD-ROM drive that launched out to the other side of the room. Other than some cosmetic damage (one broken clusore latch on of ot them), they were fine.

On the other hand, I once dropped a Dell laptop, and though it booted, it was never the same again. It had to be retired.

BTW, now that Windows can boot on Mac hardware, the true "apples to apples" OS comparison can be made. Should be interesting.
