(from
figmo,
gridlore, et. al.)
50 years ago I was finishing first grade. My desk had a hole for an inkwell, but we wouldn't be learning penmanship until the next year.
40 years ago I was a junior in high school. I was a lonely geek, and didn't go to the prom.
30 years ago I was working as a contractor at Xerox PARC, having dropped out of the PhD program at Stanford with a Masters in CS. My programming language of choice was InterLisp. I had never been to an SCA event or an SF con.
20 years ago I had been married to
flower_cat for six years, and was working at Zilog in what was then the IC Tester group, and would soon become the OEM Board group. I was writing mostly in assembly language and PL/Z.
flower_cat and I were pretty active in the SCA, and going to the occasional SF con. I had been writing filksongs for a little more than two years.
10 years ago I had been working at Ricoh California Research Center for about six months, delighted to have a real research job again after so many years. Our older daughter,
chaoswolf, was in second grade, and our little Emerald had recently celebrated her first birthday. I was mostly writing in C++ on a DEC workstation, and was starting to look seriously at an upstart Unix clone called Linux.
5 years ago I was still at Ricoh, and was writing a sizeable web application server called the PIA, in Perl. The rewrite in Java wouldn't start for almost another year. My father had recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
1 year ago The PIA group had been working for several years on a server-based messaging system called TouchVerse; I was, once again, writing server-side code in Perl.
chaoswolf was getting ready for her Junior Prom. My first LJ entry was still a month in the future.
1 month ago I was still gathering stuff into piles for my taxes, and starting to wonder where the 1099Rs were hiding.
1 week ago I was on the computer, eating breakfast and getting ready to go out for a walk.
yesterday Having gotten my new code to run cleanly under

chaoswolf has just left with
flower_cat to get fitted for a white tux for the Senior Prom. Her GF will be wearing a kimono, I believe. Emmy is watching TV in the living room.
Either I'm older than the other people doing this meme, or I wasn't supposed to take it back as far as I could. [more detail added 13:25]
