Whether you think forgiveness has to be earned tends to be a religious matter; I can't speak for Olbermann's beliefs. But in this case it may be more along the lines of "...and may God have mercy on your soul."
I am reminded of the coda to Samuel Doak's blessing to the Over the Mountain Men before said men went and kicked the snot out of the Redcoats at King's Mountain (all caps to represent Doak's Stentorian Voice):
AND LORD, BE WITH THE BRITISH, FOR THEY WILL SOON BE WITH THEE. AMEN.
and in context as a Christian, it sometimes REALLY means, "... because I really expect you to end up in Hell". I don't really approve of that usage, but in this case I'll consider an exception.
