Actually did quite a lot today; things aren't as bad as I thought. Listened carefully to 12 (the 12 simplest) of the 19 tracks, fixing levels and balance. Net: 8 are fully useable, modulo the fact that the guitar is too bass-heavy and needs some EQ. That will take study, since I haven't done it before; the problem is that with all that bass thumping along, the rest of the guitar part is too soft.
Three of the twelve tracks I worked on want a percussion track added (drum on "Daddy's World", tambourine on "TEOTWAWKI" (sort of revival meeting style), and shaker on "Bound for Hacker's Heaven". Two, "TEOTWAWKI" and "Little Computing Machine", need to have vocals redone.
Of the remaining seven, two ("Demon Lover" and "World Inside the Crystal") need me to go over the guitar tracks and even out the volume -- Audacity's "envelope tool" makes that pretty straightforward, and I've had lots of practice on the Worldcon concert. "Vampire Megabyte" needs some effects -- that'll be interesting. "High Barratry" and "Guilty Pleasures" need some vocal fixing, and "Guilty Pleasures" needs a drum part. "Silk and Steel" may need the guitar redone in the instrumental section; levels have already been adjusted.
The only one that's going to have to be totally redone is "Someplace in
the Net", and that's only because I changed chord voicings and forgot to
capo back to the right key -- it really needs to be in A, but sounds
better played in G and capoed up. It also needs an additional vocal
part -- cflute came up with a great harmony for the refrain.
So "Someplace in the Net" is the priority for tomorrow (or later in the
week if need be), so I can ship it up to cflute for her vocals.
In other status, I've commissioned artwork from artbeco, and
sent off my membership to GAFilk. I
still need to ship off a song for the GAFilk songbook; almost certainly
"Guilty Pleasures".
Progress is being made.
