What's wrong with America

Coming home from dropping the chaoswolf off at work this morning, I found myself briefly behind a car with "Honk if you love Jesus" painted on its rear windshield. Below that were two American flags on the trunk lid. Below that were two bumper stickers:

TRUTH not tolerance
Jesus loves you whether you like it or not.

No further comment.

Someone on my street has a bumper sticker referring to the crucifixion with the logo “HIS PAIN YOUR GAIN”. Doesn’t that imply that the person with the sticker is somehow not in need of salvation? “HIS PAIN OUR GAIN” would make more sense from what I know of Christian theology...

Unfortunately, English is constituted such that "our" can easily be taken not to include you, which was probably not the person's intent. This is part of the problem with trying to encapsulate any complex idea in a catchy slogan. As Einstein said, "Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.".

I'm reminded of a pickup belonging to someone down the street. There are two bumper stickers on the back:

Jesus Christ
Proud to be American

I don't know if the juxtaposition is meant to suggest that Jesus is American, or if somebody just wasn't thinking. But there it is.

I read it with a virtual ", I'm " between the two -- which gives it the "taking the Lord's name in vain" problem. I might actually wander over on a lazy Sunday afternoon and ask -- though not if I were you, because someone with such bumper stickers might take umbrage at your appearance and decide to rearrange it. Maybe not, but I wouldn't consider it worth the risk.
