It is, after all, the glue of the Internet....

Or, as my friend Garrett ([livejournal.com profile] sarekofvulcan) put it, "The Swiss-Army chainsaw of programming languages."

LOL. Beautiful. Because God (or the Gods) had a deadline, so while it said Lisp on the spec sheet, they ended up hacking it together out of perl to save time. :)

I'll believe that the gods did people in Perl, at least. It would explain why dealing with them is often like decoding a regular expression that was created from a burst of line noise.

Which reminds me of another item in my quotes file:

"sendmail.cf does not resemble line noise. It resembles the result of somebody banging his head on the keyboard. Anybody who has worked with it will understand why."

*LOL* I've got one word for the poor schmucks with dents in their foreheads....

"Postfix."

Having worked with Sendmail back in the bad old days, I quickly figured out that the best way to get a good working Sendmail was to rip off somebody else's configuration that worked more or less like you wanted it to, and change the names to protect the guilty. Anything else... dents in forehead...

And I might also add, takes one to know one... :)
