Got what may be one good track of chorus vocals with Joyce on "The End of the World as we Knew It". Our attempts at "High Barratry" were plagued by what turned out to be permission problems. Since recording and editing tend to be done by different users and sometimes on different machines, this is likely to be an ongoing hassle. (Recording as myself would require two different home directories; I might need to do that.)
I did, however get a fair amount done on build tools and the website over the
weekend. And the high point was getting the artwork from
artbeco for the album cover and the back of the booklet (which will also get used for things like
posters, because it's all kinds of cool that way). I'll probably also use
it as a background for the tray card.
I also pulled down a copy of my transaction history from Paypal, hoping that would give me some hints about data formats. OpenOffice handles the csv file just fine, but it's not really what I need in a customer database. Back to plan B.
Computer issues: the biggest problem at the moment is the fact that I'm mounting the disk where the tracks are stored over the network with NFS. I tried copying it to a local disk, but that's where the permission problems bit my arse -- hopefully that's fixed. I may also need to put the tempfiles in the same partition as the tracks, for speed. That, or mount a RAMdisk for /tmp.
The plan is to keep the main copy of the tracks on the network, but to
mirror them onto the recording box with rsync when I want to
work there. That may cause problems -- I can see clobbering issues in my
future. On the other hand, the sync scripts are the right place to fix up
the permissions.
Recording gear: I scored a used Presonus tube preamp at Guitar Showcase for $75 -- that's 25% off the new price. I already had one that I've been using for the vocal mic, and I've been wanting another for several months. Frees up my little ART preamp for other things.
Joyce prefers a headset, so we've been using the Shure SM10 that I rescued from a surplus pile at work. (It's a research lab -- every once in a while they get rid of stuff left over from previous projects. I think this came from a speech-recognition project about a decade ago.)
Bed-time for bears, it is. Past bed-time. A busy three weeks coming up.
