After the last post I went on to tweak levels in "Bugs", "Paper Pings", and "Stuck Here". The latter moves up to the number 4 slot, swapped with "Daddy's World" in 14. The effect is to improve balance between solo and multi-part pieces. Otherwise there would have been no solos in the first 11 tracks, and three in the last 5.

At this point, the major job remaining is to finish the artwork. It can't be finished, of course, until I finalize the track list, but I need to get a little farther than I have. Part of the problem is the fact that none of the layout programs on Oasis' list are really affordable for the kind of infrequent use I'll be making of them. Annoying.

GIMP will export as a Photoshop file, which it seems will be good enough as long as you keep your design elements separate and don't flatten the image. I gotta wonder whatever happened to PageMaker/FrameMaker. Did that get snapped up by Adobe and squished?

The GIMP is OK for artwork, but I've already had that done professionally in Photoshop. Now I need either Illustratator, PageMaker, or CorelDraw or Quark for the actual layout. I came within an inch of blowing a grand-and-a-half on CS2 for my work laptop -- except CS2 doesn't run on Intel Macs. CS3 does, but it just shipped this week.

FrameMaker is pretty close to dead; the tech writers are vocal enough to keep it alive, but not a big enough market for Adobe to port it to Linux where it would actually be useful. Adobe is as bad as Microsoft about supporting free software.
