... it sounds as though a bearing is slowly grinding itself to death. It might even be coming from trantor, my workstation. Since the power supply, case, and motherboard are all quite new (a few months, tops), suspicion naturally falls on the hard drive.

The one I just spend much of the weekend re-installing onto. Fortunately it's a client machine, meaning the disk is expendable.

If it was the HD you'd already know it; bearing trouble is Instantaneous Data Death. Tolerances are such nowadays that the mechanical wobble that would introduce would mean that the head wouldn't be able to track the original circles anymore.

I'd check your fans again...

Yeah; the stock fans on those really suck. Every last one I've had has failed.
