"Fun" at work
2003-08-13 11:06 amYesterday afternoon around 3pm we had a power failure, of the "flash a couple of times before dying" sort. After hanging around for twenty minutes or so the building management came on the PA and announced that there had been an explosion in a nearby manhole, and power wasn't expected to return until 8pm or so.
I took advantage of the closing to stop off at Guitar Center and buy the little Crate TX15 guitar amp I'd been eyeing. Last one in stock, too.
Came back this morning, powered up, only to discover that I didn't have network access. A couple of swapped cables and about an hour later I traced the problem to the ethernet controller on the motherboard of my Dell workstation. Snagged a board from the older system I use for testing Linux distros on, rejigger the network config files, and I'm back on the air.
Come to think of it, I've sometimes wasted more time catching up with my e-mail. Can't complain too much.
