Some days it's not worthwhile getting out of bed. Other days you wonder whether you actually did.

For the earthquake and the snow, I claim responsibility. They are both products of my perverse imagination. If you believe they actually happened, you may also be a product of my perverse imagination.

For Justice Stevens, I wish I could claim credit. He's a class act. He is also, however, weirder than anything I could possibly dream up, and smarter.

Justice Stevens renouncing the death penalty doesn't strike me as particularly surreal. He's one of the good ones, by and large. Now, were the actual *court* to renounce the death penalty (again), THAT would be a rabbit hole experience.

What disturbed me was the seeming implication that rape wasn't really all that dreadful of a crime, anyway. That? That makes me feel threatened. And threatened-feeling Marys are prone to be irate.

Hmm. I didn't see that in the article, but then I'm both male and not very sensitive to nuances.

There are lots of reasons to be opposed to the death penalty, but I'm not going to enumerate them here.

Well, Harry Blackmun got there first: "From this day forward, I no longer shall tinker with the machinery of death." But I'm glad to see Stevens see the light. For the rest, have a talk with the weather gods.

Oh, I'm not arguing that point. It's just that I literally zeroed in on the point that it was for a rape case that he was trying to get people to reconsider the matter. Had it been for another crime, it wouldn't have set me off.

A lot of crime committed against women traditionally gets swept under the carpet as a "personal problem" and often doesn't carry as great of a sentence.

Or so is my impression. This just looks like he's trying to move things in that direction, rather than being just one facet of an overarching philosophy.

I just loved a news article I read about the earthquake. One lady was quoted as saying, "I'd rather deal with tornadoes and hurricanes then experience another". Never mind that the quake did far less damage then either of the other two would've.

I've been through earthquakes and hurricanes, and too close for comfort to tornadoes. I'll take earthquakes, at least the small ones.
