Steampunk Moves Between Two Worlds - New York Times

It is also the vision of steampunk, a subculture that is the aesthetic expression of a time-traveling fantasy world, one that embraces music, film, design and now fashion, all inspired by the extravagantly inventive age of dirigibles and steam locomotives, brass diving bells and jar-shaped protosubmarines. First appearing in the late 1980s and early ’90s, steampunk has picked up momentum in recent months, making a transition from what used to be mainly a literary taste to a Web-propagated way of life.

Hmm, they seem to conveniently ignore the major connection to anime and manga. I think the Japanese had it first... And some of us were there long before there was a fashion. (I also reflect on Boomeria, the amazing 1970's complex of tunnels and structures and water cannon in the Santa Cruz mountains, made of old bronze fittings and a kind of 30/40's's meets Jules Verne meets medieval dungeon chic, or Eli McFly's restaurant in Cupertino, with its theme of Art Nouveau/Deco meets Mad Science.)

Ah, retro-romanticism, soon to become a marketing phenomenon.
