I didn't realize/remember you were a crypto fan. The Multi Arcade Machine Emulator (M.A.M.E.) team and others have spent years trying to decrypt the code/data of old arcade video games (originally encrypted to thwart bootleggers) so they can be preserved/revived/emulated before the PCBs become useless; you might find some of their efforts interesting reading, especially last year's flurry of activity that capped almost a decade of work toward reverse-engineering the fiendish Capcom CPS-2 encryption algorithm, which turned out to be a 4-round Feistel network.
Not a "fan" exactly; some of the work I do includes secure document storage and communication. But have a look at http://steve.savitzky.net/Songs/crypto.html and form your own conclusions.
