Listen to Flame Darling
2008-09-09 10:12 pmFlame Darling (Ovation CC-48). Brand-new Martin Silk and Steel strings. Let me know if you can hear the buzzing strings on loud notes. Tiny editing glitch in Paper Wings, numerous flubs, and a bit of background noise (including Colleen answering a phone call in the middle of QV), but... The point is to listen to the guitar on this one.

The Zoom's USB storage mode seems to have abruptly stopped working; I've
tried several different ways of rebooting or resetting it. The card works
fine in a reader, and passed an fsck. *shrug* at least it
works in the reader, and that seems a little faster, too.
Going to go re-string Plink now.

Date: 2008-09-10 11:14 am (UTC)What struck me instead was distortion on the vocals. It sounded like you were overloading that channel and going into saturation pretty much all the way through. Oh, not too FAR into saturation - but there was that unpleasant edge to the sound that is typical of overdriving something. I'd suggest lowering the levels you're recording at. Get nice rounded sine waves instead of those ugly flat-topped ones. :)

Date: 2008-09-10 01:56 pm (UTC)I don't think what you're hearing in the voice is clipping - looking at the waveform in Audacity, the whole thing is well under -3dB; more like -6. Conceivably overloading the microphone itself (recorded with my Zoom H2 sitting on the music stand).
More likely to be something actually in my voice. I've been having a lot of trouble with phlegm caught in my throat lately. Annoying.
