Loscon geek report
2003-12-01 08:26 amQuick summary: I had a good net connection in the room during Loscon; hence Saturday's gig report.
As I reported last Wednesday, I managed to get a solid Linux (RedHat 9) install on
chaoswolf's old laptop. The hotel had an ethernet port in the room. Easy, right? Not exactly.
The obvious thing to do was to set the laptop up for DHCP, right? Wrong. No action at all, either on my Linux box or
chaoswolf's new Windows XP machine. What I actually had to do was set up with a static IP address, as if I were on my home network. (Fortunately I have my home networking parameters memorized, so I won't have to redo it at home.)
Apparently the hotel's system operates in promiscuous mode, and just NATs and bridges whatever you put on the line. But it's too stupid to provide a DHCP server for the people who know what they're doing. BAH! Anyway, it finally worked, giving me a solid net connection via what appeared to be a T1.
At that point I was able to snarf down and install the latest Mozilla Firebird,

At that point I was able to snarf down and install the latest Mozilla Firebird,
ssh to home, and do a little more setup. RH9 is sufficiently different from 7.3, and the laptop's screen is sufficiently small (800x600) that it's going to take some work to get a really useable configuration.
