Oh no. This... shocks me without surprising me exactly; the last time I heard her was ten years ago and she was almost too ill to sing even then. But I had lost track of her and hadn't paid attention in the time since. Now I wish I had.

Her voice was damaged by sickness and cigarettes by the time I heard her sing, but you could still tell where the power had been.

Just read the wikipedia entry you linked to and it sounds like there was a whole stage of her career I never knew about because it took off after the concert I heard in the nineties. I'm glad it did, and that the illness at that time was temporary... but I wish I'd kept track of her better and known. It's so easy not to think about people you're not personally close to, until you hear they've died, and then it's too late.

I'd lost track of her, too. Probably longer ago than you did; I think I have only one of her albums on CD. But it's sad.

I'm afraid I'm getting old -- this happens more and more often now.
