mdlbear: "Sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness" - Terry Pratchett (flamethrower)

On the whole, I would prefer that things not suck. I make an exception for vacuum cleaners, however. Why anyone would add a hard-to-see and obscurely-labeled control to a vacuum cleaner that makes it suck less is something I'd rather not know, and whose designer had better hope they don't meet me on a moonless night.

...ironically, making it suck less makes it suck more, if you want to phrase it that way. *ducks!*

You want a vacuum to have less suction for older throw carpets, so that they aren't drawn in and mangled by the brush rotation, and become unravelled.

Some vacuums also have a brush height adjuster, so that you can have the brushes sweep bare floors and low-lying carpet, and higher for plush or fuzzy carpet.
