It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.

RIP Justin Aaberg, Raymond Chase (middle)
RIP Asher Brown and Billy Lucas. (bottom)

Rain

It's raining; a steady rain that marks the end of the dry season. I'm hoping that this won't be another year when the rains start early and end even earlier; we're coming off of two or three years of drought. We'll see. Every once in a while I can hear the wind howling in the trees and the wires. It's beautiful.

I managed to misplace my raincoat. It was, of course, exactly where I'd put it to get it out of the way for the dry season: hanging on the back of the office door.

Is the change in the weather a sign of other changes? The economy? Health care? It's too much to hope for, I know, but I'm going to try to be hopeful regardless, as the year winds down into winter.

Umm... it's been a busy day. Tomorrow will be busier, but at least I can work from home and save an hour's worth of commute time. So posting yesterday's doings is necessarily coming a little late. OK, a lot late.

I was basically OK, maybe a little down, most of the day, but got rather little done. Quite a lot of singing for Colleen; singing always helps. One episode of coasting slowly to a stop during my walk; I have no idea what caused that.

Lots of mudita around a co-worker's move from research to rather high management (head of a new division). Berna is blonde and bubbly, with a high soprano voice, a Turkish accent, a PhD in computer science, and a string of publications and patents that's simply amazing.

On IM with [livejournal.com profile] pocketnaomi, I think I managed to give us both a little more hope. I, um... hope I did, anyway. Hope is elusive. Like cope, it's been in rather short supply recently.

Sang for Colleen.

I am, I think, a little happier and more hopeful right now than I have good reason to be. That's OK. With friendship, love, determination, and hope, we'll make it through somehow.

There are no guarantees. As I said to my sister earlier tonight, all we can do is hold each other tight and tell each other, "it'll be all right soon". Say it as if we believe it.

The longest night of the year is over; the sun is up and the morning is bright and clean after yesterday's rain. It's a good day for feeling hopeful and optimistic, so I think I'll do that in spite of having had very little practice lately. Perhaps a good day for Getting Things Done.

I had a nice warm bath last night, slept well, and woke up feeling better than I have in several days. Apparently I've managed to dodge the Martian Death Flu and the Zombie Cold. So far. Wish me luck.

A number of people on my friends list wrote thoughtful Solstice posts. I meant to, really I did, but instead I ended up hacking on the makefile rules that pull together the CDROM portion of About Bleeding Time. Better that way, I think.

I'm going in to work now -- to catch up on my email, hopefully do a little actual work, and bring my laptop and a couple of other things home so I'll have them next week to get ready for travel.

Good morning to you all!
