We Eat The New KFC Double Down And Live To Tell About It (But It's Only Been 15 Minutes) - Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me! Blog : NPR

The "double down" is, apparently, a bacon sandwitch with two pieces of fried or grilled chicken replacing the bread. In other words, a very low-carb, gluten-free sandwitch from a fast-food joint. I love it!

And as someone who lives with a celiac, I'd be skeptical that something in KFC's gluten-rich environment could be safe.

I looked up exactly what goes into the Double Down. The fried chicken cutlets are breaded with a mixture that does contain wheat flour. But there's no gluten in the grilled cutlets, nor the cheese, nor the bacon. I was hoping that I could eat this if I could just get them to leave off the cheese. Alas, both the fried and the grilled chicken - indeed, every chicken product KFC sells - contain onions, garlic, and MSG.

You could make your own, if Bell & Evans poultry products are available on the Left Coast. They are all-natural, and they make frozen breaded chicken cutlets, including a gluten-free version. I use the regular kind a lot, myself, because they're not seasoned with anything at all. The next time I get some (they're rather difficult to find in my local stores), I may just fry up two cutlets and stick some bacon in between them...

Hmmm, interesting to say the least. I do have to wonder though, how many calories are in one (grilled) and how many meals it would have to replace?

But as for the no bread, I do that all the time... ;-)

My darling husband, who has eaten the Double Down, says "Not bad, but not worth getting again for the five bucks it cost for the sandwich. The original is better than the grilled."
