LiveJournal's new sneaky trick -> LiveJournal's latest misguided attempt to make a quick buck. -> No Opt In, No Ads

What they're doing is redirecting links to outboundlink.me, which adds an affiliate code and sends you back to, e.g. Amazon with the affiliate bucks going to LJ. Sleazy, and both a privacy and a security risk. Not to mention a violation of my copyright.

... So I now have, after much delay, an account on Dreamwidth ([personal profile] mdlbear, of course), though I haven't made use of it yet. I'm not going to abandon LJ -- most of my friends are still here, and I have a permanent account. And I'm not going to move my primary blog to DW; eventually they'll both be cross-posted to from someplace completely under my control, probably under steve.savitzky.net.

Well, dang. I really wish LJ's new overlords would stop that nonsense.

What's the code for inserting a Dreamwidth username into an LJ post (analogous to <lj user="username">)? Thanks!

Ah - I don't usually have both sites open at once - too many open browser windows can make my computer unhappy - but I can do this. Thanks!

Crap. Well, this is probably why LJ was so friggin' slow or totally unreactive on my laptop, where I have NoScript running.

Crossposting from DW is easy; it allows you to (1) tag for usernames on all the journal sites (<user name="elfwreck"> = elfwreck; <user name="elfwreck" site="livejournal.com"> is [livejournal.com profile] elfwreck) and (2) set a crosspost notice that says how many comments there are at the Dreamwidth post. (And, if you wanted to, shut off the LJ comments. Not recommended unless you're actively attempting to push your f'list into moving to DW.)

(I'm [personal profile] elf at DW. And elfwreck, which I don't post at, but it lets people find me there & then find the journal I'm actively using.)

I actually am posting all my stuff on Dreamwidth, and cross-posting to LJ. I have the footer turned off and the comments enabled during cross-posting, which makes the entire procedure invisible to my LJ friends. It does involve trusting Dreamwidth with my LJ password, but I do trust them, substantially more than I do LJ.
