Well, it's the first of March. Where the fsck did February go? I was going to do FAWM, but I didn't. Foo. I had a little less work to do this morning; usually I have to split the week's log entries between the old month (in a file called, for example 2020/02.done) and the new one. I can put off starting 2020/03.done to next week, not that it's terribly difficult; just one extra cut and paste. And a git add, which I should automate. Hmm. *hack, hack* Did automate.

Tuesday I posted about The Future We Choose: Surviving the Climate Crisis, which I finished reading Wednesday. Turns out there's an associated website: Global Optimism -- the subtitle, or what would be the subtitle if they hadn't crammed it all into the page title, is "From pessimism to optimism - Global Optimism exists to precipitate a transformation from pessimism to optimism as a method of creating social and environmental change." I just found that today, so I'll probably have more for you in a couple of days. Meanwhile, just go read the book.

In the shorter term, we have a incipient pandemic to worry about. Recently @siderea has been running a series of posts under the coronavirus2020 tag. Like The Future We Choose, this is absolutely a must-read-now. Start with Preparing for the Pandemic: Stage 0. It connects at its downwhen terminus with an earlier series, influenza1918.

For the foodies reading this list, I offer you a list of Antidepressant foods -- 44 foods that boost mental health (you'll find the raw table under the cut, on Wednesday). The top meat and vegetable, oysters and watercress respectively, are among Colleen's favorites. The kicker for this is not how many it kills, it's the percentage that get sick enough to require hospital treatment [and would most likely die if they don't]

Of those infected ~10% experience mild to no symptoms.
20% have symptoms requiring medical supervision and hospitalisation
40% have severe symptoms of respiratory distress requiring 'strong' medical intervention, such as oxygen.
20% have life-threatening symptoms requiring assisted breathing apparatus and intubation.
7-8% suffer critical symptoms requiring full cardio-pulmonary life support.
2-3% die.

Which basically means, that of those infected, roughly 90% need hospitalisation and 70% need full ICU support.

The virus if it's not contained is predicted to infect as much as 60% of the population. The medical services in any country cannot cope with that many patients, especially not those numbers requiring ICU.

If it gets out of hand, the death toll will be much higher than it needs to be, due to the medical system being overwhelmed and there being insufficient resources to treat all but the least affected, who would probably recover anyway.

I haven't read the book, at least not yet, but I did look at the list of ten things you can do, and I would order them differently.

"You" - it's not clear whether the authors mean you and me, as an individuals, or us, as a society, or country, or humanity as a whole. They're different, but as an individual I'm most interested in what I can do as an individual.
10 Engage In Politics

This would be my #1, by far. So many of the other goals simply cannot be meaningfully accomplished by individuals acting alone. Like #5 Move Beyond Fossil Fuels.

Public policy changes are needed, and this can only happen through political action. Existing policies make cars, fossil fuel use, disposable everything, non-sustainable mega-agriculture, (and more) cheap and convenient. No amount of individual virtuous behavior is going to change this. Most people are going to live in whatever way is most affordable, convenient and comfortable, and policy needs to guide this. Start with carbon pricing, plus making quality alternatives (denser development, transit) available and attractive.

I get very annoyed with fossil fuel propaganda that claims that any problems are the fault of individuals, that you should just make better choices if you don't like the way things are. Better choices are being strangled at birth by the existing business power structures. Politics and policy must change.

I should do more than I have. Vote. Write letters and make phone calls to politicians at all levels. Be noisy, be heard.
