It's been almost exactly a month since my last State of the Bear post, but this feels like more of a "state of the nation" post. It does not look good.

Even though Biden won the election, the Repugs will do as much damage to the country -- and the environment -- as they can in the remaining two months before he takes office. If he takes office. And after that, it's only a matter of time before the Trumpists get back in control. Then what?

I should go to bed. Ticia has been trying to tell me it's bedtime for the last half hour. I've been sleeping very badly the last few weeks.

Right now, the GOP is the party of Trump, because he holds the keys to the votes of his fans. But that cannot last, because he cannot live forever. I don't see his children by birth or marriage as being anywhere near so popular (thank goodness!). Trumpism will not last forever, and it's even possible that actual conservative republicanism will surge forward again once Trumpism fails.

I hope you're right, but I don't think it's just Trump at this point. His followers would follow anyone who knows how to feed them the right set of lies, and I think there are enough of those to keep Trumpism alive and dangerous for decades. Maybe the Republican party will fall apart, but I'm not going to count on it.
