flower_cat's new computer didn't make a noticable difference, that the only major noise source left had to be the CPU fan. But I didn't know how major. I put in a CoolerMaster LED Silent 8025 system fan, and it's now almost inaudible. In fact, if you stand equidistant from both systems, most of the noise you hear is coming from the other machine -- in an Antec Sonata case under a cardboard box.
Problem solved.
