Took my main recording system (VIA EPIA 800; M-Audio Delta 66; 40GB disk) out of its old, rather clunky Morex Venus case and shoehorned it into the shiny new Morex 2699B case I mentioned Monday. Started last night; stalled because I couldn't find the piece of metalwork that holds the hard drive. Resumed this morning, discovered that it had been in the case all the time; it just didn't look like what I thought I remembered. Duh. It was a bit fiddly getting the PCI soundcard in, and I left out the bracket for the thinline CD drive I didn't install (it would have blocked access to the RAM slots) and didn't power up the two 40mm fans (I don't think they're needed).

Powered it up this evening and it worked. Took the fanless power supply it had had in the Venus case (it replaced the original PSU, which had a fan) and moved it over to the X terminal. Also removed the DVD drive I'd been using as a "dummy load" to try to beat the mysterious-shutdown-during-boot problem. Booted right up -- so it probably was some interaction with the power supply.

I still need a case of some sort for the terminal; I'll probably take a clue from this cute little "box" and use two pieces of plastic.

Oh yes: it's quiet! The only rotating parts are the CPU fan and hard drive in the recording box, which doesn't have to be anywhere near the microphones.

It has been a long while since I've seen a glider. I should dig out my old Amiga Game of Life program and port it to Windows - just for fun.
