Stupid !$!@#$ Windows

Stupid goddamn Windows! For some reason, Windows on the Younger Daughter's machine wasn't responding to the keyboard. Mouse worked fine, and the keyboard worked for the bootloader and Windows login, so it's not hardware. Anything I could think of to do to fix it would, of course, involve typing in a URL to find software. Nuke and pave. Takes roughly half an hour to load the install image from three CDs, and probably another two hours to install a minimally useful set of programs (Firefox, OOo, network config for the printers). Foo.

Didn't know it was there. But I'm not much of a Windows user, except for untangling the occasional problem for other family members.

"sfc /scannow" is your friend.

If it didn't work after that, the next thing to do would the type of thing that you have to do when you're looking at untangling a Sony DRM mess-type thing: look at the kbd class filter drivers to make sure that nothing has been entered in there. That's the point where I would normally suggest people just give up and reinstall, since to do it requires disgusting registry knowledge and permission modification.

I have only been able to get Windows on the machines I use, and am thus deprived of the true beauty of computers. My mother tried to put Linux on her computer, but it runs very slowly and can't access the internet, mostly because of the set-up. ::shrug:: So the Windows machine is in the living room. :(

Try one of the small live CD distributions, like DamnSmall (only 50MB, so it doesn't take forever to download).
