The last few days I've been spending altogether too much time in a discussion on one of RedHat's mailing lists about the sad quality of Linux documentation, finally ending in a rant which I expanded into this essay.

One of the glories of Unix in the old days was that all of its documentation was online, on the system, in one place.  You could browse it, print it, search it, reformat it for other devices, and so on.    That's not true anymore, but web technology has the potential to bring it all back together.

Chalie Stross has a plan for turning out some definitive documentation on several Linuces... but it doesn't scratch many individual itches to document stuff
