I'm assuming you're aware of both lj-update (package for emacs), and of Logjam's "remove line breaks" functionality...
Ye gods. I haven't used LaTeX in a coon's age... haven't really written anything specifically for print media. But if I was to, that's how I'd do it. These days, though, most anything is either a web page or OpenOffice...
I don't use logjam; I do use lj-update, but hacked it to use my favorite HTML editing mode (html-helper-mode) and to turn off automatic formatting. The latter, plus an HTML editing mode that always closes tags, means that I simply don't have to worry about extra line breaks anymore unless I use the web client. Which I do, occasionally.
