Travels with Plink and Cthulhu: final thoughts

This is just a rather disconnected set of notes.

With 42 CDs (30 shrinkwrapped copies of CC&S and 6 "pre-order" sets) in it, the backpack is a bit too heavy, but it still fit nicely under the seat, even with my shoulderbag under the flap and my rather bulky headphones in the "CD player" compartment.

In any case it's awkward, especially combined with Plink, since I can only have one of the two at a time on my back. Next time I'll bring a folding luggage cart -- it can live in the overhead rack strapped onto Plink. Or, better, with Plink strapped onto the back so that it can fold up easily, and so I can set the backpack on it without having to move Plink.

Next time I have to fly I need to ship CDs to the dealers, and just take enough to cover unexpected shortfalls and a few in-person sales.

50 CDs took up most of the suitcase. I think I need a bigger one; there wasn't room for the hiking boots, which would have come in handy.

I have to remember to print out a fresh songbook before every con. And practice up a two-fer ahead of time.

I *really* need to do a thorough overhaul of my book. It's full of stuff I never play anymore, and missing all sorts of things I've been learning to play that I want to do in circles. (Of course, I spent more time socializing than playing at OVFF, and never actually took my books out of the room, so the few songs I played in circle were ones I had to memory. But I digress...)

Everything I've written is on the computer, and everything I'm actively trying to learn for performance ends up there, so it's easy to print fresh copies. A fast laser printer helps. I can also print out just the lyrics for a concert set, although last-minute changes occasionally trip me up there.

The biggest problem is remembering to transcribe changes and annotations before I toss the old copy. And I'm going to have to add special handling for performance notes and transposed chords, now that I'm collaborating with people who don't use capos.

I have things on the computer, but I don't typically carry those files with me, as up until recently I haven't had a decent laptop. I also find a laptop screen inadequate to preform from.

The only thing stopping me from printing stuff out and organizing it in the book is laziness and procrastination, though. I really need to get back to putting proper chords on my own parodies, though. At least the ones I can actually play. *grin*

I never try to use the computer as a songbook except in dire emergencies. Making the PDFs accessible from the web means that I can print them in any convention venue that has a business center. (Having them in a form that's easy to convert to PDF or HTML using a script helps immensely -- I wouldn't want to try it with Word files.)
