I was talking on the phone with Mom this evening; she mentioned that yesterday would have been her 65th anniversary, if Dad were still alive.

I told her that I mention her whenever the subject of breast cancer comes up -- she had her surgery in 1953 and 1966. Hang in there!

I don't suppose it's entirely a coincidence that I've been listening to a sermon on grief that I got from this post by gmcdavid, is it?

My mind boggles that your mother's surgeries were in 1953 and 1966 and you still have her with you. You are so lucky.

My mother's first surgery was in 1969, and I lost her in 1982. She had some doctors who weren't as careful as they could be about which procedures she actually needed.

She's a tough old gal, to be sure -- going on 87 this year. She's taken over the library at her continuing care home. We lost Dad in '99 to pancreatic cancer.
