Good news

The kids are out to the movies; Colleen and I are back in the living room after a relaxing hour of snuggle and conversation. Things are going well with us right now, after several months of rough going.

She had good news this morning - the ultrasound on her right leg yesterday showed no sign of blood clots, so that red swelling is more likely some kind of persistent infection. That they can treat; she'll have to go in on Monday so they can take some samples and see what they're up against.

Do other geeks not ever get tempted to do stuff like their own basic cytology and WBC to confirm the presence of infection? Microscopes aren't difficult to get access to, the stains and slides are cheap, and the learning curve for the really basic stuff is pretty shallow.

Whether infection was present wasn't much of a question. What we're not equipped to do is figure out which of the hundreds of possible antibiotics it will respond to. Many of the obvious ones have been tried at one time or another.

It was also necessary to rule out blood clots, as the most obvious explanation for the swelling.

Also, while setting up a home lab isn't terribly expensive, it requires clear horizontal surface area, which is in extremely short supply in this house.
