Our household March party was last week, but there were apparently plenty of people who knew we were having one, but didn't get contacted and didn't call soon enough. We're expecting drop-ins today.

Finally got the new gateway into the rack; it looks kind of silly in its little nearly-cubical case sitting next to the full-tower fileserver. But the two of them are talking gigabit ethernet to each other -- I installed the new card in the fileserver last night. (Have to work on the fileserver either after everyone else goes to bed, or before they get up. And the only safe time for work on the network and gateway is morning. Fine unless something goes wrong. I really hate to go to bed or go off to work with the household internet connection not working.)

The flower_cat and I finally sat down and watched "The Corpse Bride" last night -- I have a tendency to buy DVDs when I see them, and then let them sit around for months or even years before I find the time to watch them. Just not a movie person, I guess.

Want a GigE switch for the house. Can't spend the money... especially 'cause I really do need eight ports. Scarily, the eighth would probably be an uplink to the old switch...

I don't have any recent computers. But I've got a whole lotta slightly-oldish ones...

What I have right now is a 16-port 100MHz switch for most things, plus a 5-port GigE switch ($60 or so at Fry's) for just the gateway, the fileserver, and my workstation (leaving one port going to the "slow" switch, and one for a spare).

Since everything's wired with CAT-5, and none of the machines outside the office has a GigE port, it works out pretty well -- I'm probably good for another year or so before I'll want need any more local bandwidth.
