So it seems there's a documentary, released ?last year, called The High Frontier: The Untold Story of Gerard K. O’Neill (page includes trailer). Opening sequence.

Seems to be on iTunes and Google Play. I remember when The High Frontier: Human Colonies in Space came out, in 1976. The year Colleen and I were married. I'd say "good grief!", but...

raw notes )

Weird day. A little actual work accomplished at work, but mostly the day was dominated by a meeting where we discussed what would happen soon when (if all goes well) our current research project starts turning into a product. It promises to be, um... an adventure.

It was raining all day, which made a good excuse to get in a half-hour walk on the treadmill. Third time in the fitness center. Both of the last times there was someone running on the treadmill next door. I'm not sure they even noticed me.

A couple of days ago I'd spotted the DVD of Where the Wild Things Are in Safeway, and Colleen and I watched it last night. I didn't like it. Painful in spots; none of it lighthearted like the feeling I got from the book. Very hard to suspend disbelief, especially the voices. And very much NOT for young kids, especially if they like the book.

Nice long snuggle and conversation in bed.

Only one link, but it's a great one: a comment by [livejournal.com profile] judifilksign: 'Sometimes, I have to go through the "HALT" to myself: Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?' It's a fantastic mnemonic for a checklist I hadn't realized I needed. Thank you!

PSA: did you know that Grand Central Starport is having its annual "It's Green!" party today? You're invited.

Woke up early -- the [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat said later that she slept like a log. Makes sense. Even if I don't quite wake up, I notice when she's restless. I've discovered that I feel better on dark mornings if I turn on the main lights in the kitchen and dining room rather than trying to be frugal and use only the spot lighting.

Found a bouncy [livejournal.com profile] super_star_girl who had apparently gone to bed early, woken up way too early, and been reading quietly in her room until she smelled coffee. Now, if only she'd do that on school days... She offered to make pancakes for breakfast.

Went out for a walk about 10:30. Stayed on the South side of W. San Carlos this time, walking around our immediate neighborhood via a couple of streets I haven't been on in years, if ever. Not a pretty walk, particularly, but interesting.

When I came back from my walk I found all the leftover ribs and soup gone, and the family watching Madagascar on DVD. For some reason I find it annoying rather than funny, I think because a lot of the humor comes from the exaggerated accents. To me it just feels like making fun of people -- in some cases people like the ones I grew up with -- because they talk funny. I'll pass, thanks.

I made myself a large batch of hot tofu, and crawled back into my hole.

Our household March party was last week, but there were apparently plenty of people who knew we were having one, but didn't get contacted and didn't call soon enough. We're expecting drop-ins today.

Finally got the new gateway into the rack; it looks kind of silly in its little nearly-cubical case sitting next to the full-tower fileserver. But the two of them are talking gigabit ethernet to each other -- I installed the new card in the fileserver last night. (Have to work on the fileserver either after everyone else goes to bed, or before they get up. And the only safe time for work on the network and gateway is morning. Fine unless something goes wrong. I really hate to go to bed or go off to work with the household internet connection not working.)

The [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat and I finally sat down and watched "The Corpse Bride" last night -- I have a tendency to buy DVDs when I see them, and then let them sit around for months or even years before I find the time to watch them. Just not a movie person, I guess.

OMFG ROTFL

Just got back from seeing Wallace and Gromit: the Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Go see it. Words do not do it justice; I haven't laughed that hard at a movie for decades.

Twenty boxes in the living room, three or four up in the attic, four grocery bags of recyclage, and I'm still not done with the office (but getting closer). Six boxes from the CD cabinet, which is now empty and ready to have its door unhinged. I'm now about to go buy the bathroom fixtures.

Then I get to finish unhinge the CD cabinet door, finish packing the office, and disassemble the shelves and counters. And box up the appropriate corner of the kitchen.
