Weird day. A little actual work accomplished at work, but mostly the day was dominated by a meeting where we discussed what would happen soon when (if all goes well) our current research project starts turning into a product. It promises to be, um... an adventure.

It was raining all day, which made a good excuse to get in a half-hour walk on the treadmill. Third time in the fitness center. Both of the last times there was someone running on the treadmill next door. I'm not sure they even noticed me.

A couple of days ago I'd spotted the DVD of Where the Wild Things Are in Safeway, and Colleen and I watched it last night. I didn't like it. Painful in spots; none of it lighthearted like the feeling I got from the book. Very hard to suspend disbelief, especially the voices. And very much NOT for young kids, especially if they like the book.

Nice long snuggle and conversation in bed.

Only one link, but it's a great one: a comment by [livejournal.com profile] judifilksign: 'Sometimes, I have to go through the "HALT" to myself: Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?' It's a fantastic mnemonic for a checklist I hadn't realized I needed. Thank you!

PSA: did you know that Grand Central Starport is having its annual "It's Green!" party today? You're invited.

A good day. I even spent some time on a treadmill in the hotel's fitness center. I'm having a good time; rather laid-back. Lots of conversation, a lot of showing-off of the YD's pictures; not much singing. The evening concerts by CD and AJA were great. Only caught one song from New Bunk Foss -- once you bring the guitars and voices up to match the drum kit, it's way too loud for this old bear.

I probably ate too much, more because of socializing over food than because I needed three meals. Brunch today, so I probably won't want more than dinner this evening.

The weather was cool and cloudy at lunchtime -- perfect for walking. The usual route to the pond via the back hill. I thought I was at my usual pace, but may well have been going a little faster because my heart-rate stayed up even on the downhill segments. In any case it came to an abrupt slowdown when I got some rather painful leg cramps. Promptly stretching the calf muscle in question (the right leg) seems to have kept it from staying knotted up, but it sure hurt. Several times. It seemed to want to tighten up when I got back to work and stopped walking, so I did a little more slow, careful walking indoors until it seemed to stabilize. I was still getting twinges a couple of hours later. Flexoril tonight.

I cleverly left my heart-rate monitor at work along with the T-shirt that didn't need washing because I took hardly any exercise walks this week. But it looked like a nice, cool, cloudy day and I wasn't hurting, so I set out along the Los Gatos Creek trail, with one eye on the weather.

I managed a reasonable pace, and walked about 4 miles in 1:15 or so. I'd forgotten to stretch before starting out, but a couple of stretches in the middle and after seem to have helped. I don't have shin cramps, though I do seem to have ended up with a blister on my right toe.

Down to the Rose Garden today. It's dead flat, so I didn't get my heart rate up very high; but I got a bit of a workout. I'm not sure whether the stretching helped or not; I might have overdone it a little. And it still seems to take me a long time to find the right pace. Grump.

The Royal Amethyst was almost spent, but I found a couple of nice full blossoms to take pictures of.

  • Read the relevant parts of Stretching (11/3) and scan the diagrams so I have a reference I can carry around with me. (Monday at work?)
  • Re-arrange the concert and studio track directories, putting tracks underneath albums where appropriate. Having them all in one directory makes it too big and cluttered, and makes it hard to have multiple versions of a song. Split OVFF recordings into large chunks and assign meaningful names. (11/3: moved concerts to /users/record; renamed OVFF files. Not split yet.)
  • Install the Delta 1010 soundcard and 64Studio on the machine that's currently my workstation (Trantor). Swap video cards and names with the old recording machine (Harmony) and move it into the studio bedroom for recording.
  • Firm up the set list for my concert at Loscon. Assume +Kat -Joyce. (11/3 tentatively, and in no particular order: cicero rosie stuff mil-dawn bugs tool bigger rrprayer barratry)

For some people this may be NaNoWriMo; I'm not going to have time for that. I want to have scratch tracks for Amethyst Rose, and hopefully also for Hackers' Heaven done by the end of the year.

Down to the pond via the hill; 1.5 times around. A little slower this time, mainly by shortening my stride. Stretching before and after. Wore the running shoes with an ankle brace on the left; this seems to have worked. One knee twinge, on the right, and some random muscle tightness mainly on the left calf and, for the first time, the right thigh. I think I'm basically hitting different sets of limits each time. Hopefully that indicates progress.

Same route as yesterday, but with the hiking boots instead of the running shoes, and faster. No ankle pain, no shin pain thanks to a little stretching before yesterday's walk, flexeril last night when it seemed to want to knot up, and a little stretching after today's walk. Still haven't done more than glance at the book, but even that has been helpful.

Got in about a 40-minute walk around the Dublin Metro loop again. Started feeling it in the right calf this time. It was cooler this morning than it was yesterday afternoon, so I wore a flannel shirt. And an ankle brace on the left foot, which I think I'll keep.

Must practice for twofer this afternoon.

Went out for a short walk - about 40 minutes around the little business loop in front of the hotel. Still, I managed to raise a bit of a sweat, so it must have done some good. Down to the shopping center, mainly to pick up another knee brace, naproxen, Tums, and batteries in anticipation of Thursday's travel to OVFF. Starting out, knowing that I had to keep to a strolling pace because of continuing tightness in my calf muscles (how long do they take to recover, anyway?), I amused myself by pumping my arms 3-against-2 vs. my steps. Worked for about 5 minutes, then my arms started to hurt. Foo.

Good walking weather; I understand it's due to warm up next week -- what's with that? It took me about half an hour to find a good pace that started getting my heart rate up without hurting. Also had to tighten my right knee brace -- I still don't know whether that was really part of the solution or part of the problem, since I also shortened my stride a little. By the time I got back, after a little over 40 minutes, I felt I was finally converging on a pace that would give me a decent amount of exercise, so I walked around the parking lot for a while, with my heart-rate up in the 130's.

My shins are a little sore now.

Stopped off at Long's this morning on my way to work to pick up some alpha-lipoic acid and a knee brace (plus a couple of other items which don't come into the matter at hand).

Today was cool, overcast, but not raining -- at least when I set out. There were a couple of light sprinkles while I was walking, but I ignored them. I was unable to get my heart rate over 120 on downhill segments; in fact, I was halfway around the pond before I got up to 120 at all. Went around four times, at which point I was feeling a few odd pains and decided not to push my luck.

I had the new knee brace on the right knee, and had no trouble with it. There was some pain in the left knee when I was most of the way back; I sat down on a convenient phone electronics enclosure and slipped on the old knee brace, which I had put in my pocket for just that eventuality.

Very little shin pain; either I'm gradually working past that point, or I wasn't pushing the pace as hard as I thought I was. Probably the latter, considering.

Despite the fact that it looked clear and sunny when I peered out the window before my walk, there was in fact an almost-invisible light drizzle. Decided not to let that stop me.

My shins were starting to hurt before I quite made it down to the pond; backed off a little and only went around once. By the time I was headed back to work the pain had shifted from the front of my legs to the backs, so probably about the right pace. No pain in either my ankles or my knees, but there were two very disturbing moments where my right (!) knee felt wobbly, like it was about to buckle under me. That would have been bad.

Altogether a good walk, though; I didn't even get particularly wet.

Went over to Micro Center after lunch in search of a video card, USB stick, and toner. Found 'em. For $40, $30, and $100 respectively.

The video card is a Radeon 9250 with 128MB of RAM; I can remember when that was a respectible amount of memory for a workstation. Plugged it in and it just plain worked, so I'm a happy bear. I have a quiet office again! Yay!

As it turned out, just pulling the old toner cartridge and rocking it gently from side to side restored it pretty well, but at the rate it was fading I'm not going to count on more than 100 more pages or so at the outside. So the new one won't be sitting around for too long.

I've determined that what I really want for a heart-rate monitor is a pulse sensor, preferably wrist-worn, that talks bluetooth. That and GPS drivers for my OpenMoko phone. A page or two of code can take it from there.

Between the fact that my shins were starting to hurt, and the fact that there was a stupid rock band between me and the Rose Garden, I cut my walk significantly short this morning. The band was thanks to the San Jose Rock & Roll Half-Marathon, which is also responsible for a lot of street closings today. About halfway down to the Rose Garden I came upon a big crowd of people trudging the other way; presumably the actual runners had long passed.

Stats, such as they are: time: 19:55; Avg: 109; Max: 114. Miserable.

Thanks to an email from B., who isn't on LJ and presumably missed the post where I mentioned that anonymous comments had been re-enabled, I have what purports to be a more accurate way of computing my training range:

 Let:
    MHR = (220 - age_in_years) = 160		# maximum heart rate
    RHR = resting_heart_rate  ~= 65
 then:
    TRmin = RHR + .6 * (MHR - RHR) = 122	# minimum training rate
    TRmax = RHR + .9 * (MHR - RHR) = 150.5	# maximum training rate

This compares to "moderate" = 112-128 (70-80% MHR). Measuring resting heart rate is challenging; reaching over to pick up the monitor raised my rate to 72, and it's too dark to see well at 6am, so the best I can say is that my RHR is somewhere between 60 and 65. The whole thing seems slightly specious, since RHR presumably decreases with training, so the formula has the range going lower as you get into better shape. On the other hand, 120-140 is what I've been aiming for. Anyone have any further insights into this?

Not much of a walk today -- just a couple of times around the building. The weather was looking distinctly dicey, but more importantly I wanted to let my calf muscles and left ankle recover a bit. So maybe 10 minutes; at least, with a couple of trips up and down the hill on the East side of the building, I got a little exercise.

It rained a little this morning. It RAINED this afternoon. Quite impressive. I was on my way to a meeting in another building at the time. It seems to have cleared now. Hopefully I'll get a good walk tomorrow.

Based largely on the comments on this post by [livejournal.com profile] hvideo and others, it looks as though I'll be trying to reduce carbohydrates in my diet. Makes sense -- the one time I actually lost weight (back in college) I did it by cutting back on carbs.

I'm not going to be fanatical about it, but I'm going to cut back on dried fruit, bread, and potatoes, and I'm not going to worry about the fact that I feel better after a breakfast of eggs and bacon (or Ma Po tofu) than I do after milk and cereal. And I'll quit stocking up on dried fruit for at-the-desk lunches and go back to tofu, nuts, and pepperoni (a package of two sticks lasts two days).

Links for low carb: about.com, Wikipedia.

[livejournal.com profile] hvideo also suggests looking into alpha-lipoic acid, an OTC antioxidant diet supplement that "significantly and rapidly reduces the frequency and severity of symptoms of the most common kind of diabetic neuropathy" according to this article on MayoClinic.org. There's another article here.

As long as I'm clearing out my tabs, here's exercise.about.com, and the Wikipedia articles on exercise and walking (which aren't as useful as they might be). The article on aerobic exercise is better.

Today's walk was at something closer to speed, though I backed off considerably after it started hurting. Unlike yesterday, which was more of a "I can keep this pace up as long as I want" day, today was more like "well, it doesn't hurt as much anymore; let's see if I can keep going". I walked to the pond but skipped the hill to spare my left ankle -- the road is severely crowned, and it hurts. Went around the pond five or six times -- I lost count.

Today's walk takes us down scenic Sand Hill Road at the leisurely pace of about three mph. After an interlude in Rivendell Safeway, during which provisions in the form of yogurt and beef jerky were obtained, we return on the slightly more strenuous Sharon Park Drive. The return trip is mostly uphill.

Stats: time: 1:04; avg: 110; max: 139.

Walking on flat ground at my old pace of 3mph gets my heart somewhere in the 100-110 bpm range. I can walk for hours at that pace as long as I stop every hour or so to take my shoes off and let my feet cool down. Otherwise I get blisters. Which I'm close to, right now.

Same walk as yesterday, only "at speed". The hiking boots (because my left ankle was feeling a bit dicey) may have added a few ounces more of dynamic load. Felt pretty good; the trick appears to be backing off just before the calf muscles start hurting. (As the old joke goes, it's a two-pass algorithm.)

Stats: time: 46:13; avg: 131; max: 155. I was over 120bpm for almost the entire walk, I think. Somewhere between 3.5-4mph; I'll have to check with the gmap pedometer sometime.

According to the neurologist I saw at Kaiser this morning, the kind of peripheral neuropathy I'm experiencing is normally associated with diabetes, but it's also not all that unusual with metabolic syndrome, which is basically the condition of being an old fat guy. The relevant symptoms include fasting hyperglycemia (borderline), high blood pressure (being treated), central obesity (check), decreased HDL cholesterol (check), elevated triglycerides (check, in spades).

So I'm about to start what amounts to an approximation of a diabetic diet, along with increasing my exercise. Meaning I can look forward to being sore, tired, and hungry for the rest of my life. Grumble.

My legs and arms haven't quite recovered from my exercise over the weekend, so I dropped back to my old walking pace with no arm motion. I did take in the extra hill on the way out; total distance about 3 miles.

Stats: 55 minutes, average heart rate: 111; max: 135. So not too bad, considering.

Went to Santana Row (the local very upscale shopping center) with the [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat and [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf for their "first annual Pear Festival". No big deal -- basically just a couple of craft booths added to their usual Sunday farmer's market. Had a good lunch, though. Did a little window shopping, and some actual shopping in Borders. Not too fond of chain bookstores, but it's the one that's there. The Cat got a couple of cookbooks for the Wolfling, and I picked up a copy of The Children of Hurin, which for some reason I never got around to buying when it came out.

After that we swapped daughters and went to Sports Basement to see whether we could fit the two of them in shoes. Got a pair of New Balance for the Y.D.; the Cat's feet (high-arched, extra wide, and somewhat swollen) proved impossible to fit. But she's promised to look for shoes with real arch support -- I think it'll help with her knee, hip, and back problems. I got yet another pair of Superfeet arch supports, so now I have them for all three of the shoes I wear on a regular basis.

Unlike my first pair of Superfeet a couple of years ago, I don't seem to have had any trouble getting used to these.

Drove out to the creek this time, wearing the Keen hiking boots with new arch supports. Started out strong, but started feeling calf pain after around 15 minutes. Dropped the pace down, which brought the heart rate down to the 115-119 range. Somewhere around 25 minutes I seemed to find a pace that didn't hurt but kept the rate up, so I kept going under Leigh Ave. and continued on to Meridian. Somewhere around 50 minutes my rate started going up past 120, presumably because I was finally getting tired.

Don't know whether the initial problems were due to the shoes, the pace, yesterday's exercise, or the fact that I was mostly walking on asphalt. This will take some experimentation, I think.

Stats: Total time: 1:20; Average heart rate: 120; Max: 133.

So that's what it needed! Went back to Sports Basement this morning and got a pair of Superfeet green arch supports. (I had a pair, but could only find one this morning, and in any case it was cut down to size 10. I'm an 11 these days. 7pm found it! In the trash, of course; I've been trying to clean the bedroom, too.)

Since I didn't quite trust the arch supports not to start hurting, I came back home, put on the heart-rate monitor, and set out to go around the Rose Garden. No weights, but I kept up the arm-pumping. My heart rate was in the low 120's when I got to the Rose Garden about 17 minutes into the walk. By the time I'd gone around once I'd gotten it up to the mid-to-high 120's. Went around twice more; rate between 125-135. Slowed down to roughly my old pace about 25 minutes minutes after reaching the Rose Garden. Took a couple of pictures, and came home.

The fact that one can walk all around the Rose Garden on grass undoubtedly helped, but so did the shoes (good stiff instep) and arch supports. My shins do not hurt, though they seemed to be getting close to it a couple of times.

The handy chart in the heart-rate monitor's instruction booklet lists "moderate" exercise for my age (60) as 112-128 bpm, so it looks as though I'm actually right about where I should be. I'll be getting at least one more pair of arch supports, for the hiking boots.

After re-filling my prescriptions (ouch!!) and getting some lab-work done (to see whether my new statin is working properly) at Kaiser, I took advantage of the location to go down the street to Sports Basement, a discount sporting-goods store located in the cavernous space that was once the Fry's store at the corner of Lawrence and Kern in Sunnyvale. It has since moved to larger quarters a few blocks away, but the giant [ENTER] and [ESC] keys on the door are still there.

Bought a Polar FS2 heart-rate monitor. It's too clunky to wear as a watch on a regular basis, but it looks as though it will be ok while I'm exercising. Also got a gait analysis in the shoe department; was told that I pronate a little and need "stability shoes". I think the ones I have will provide that -- they're noticably stiffer on the inside. Not clear whether that's the problem. She also recommended arch supports; I have some that I can try.

Compared to the other sports store I've been in recently, especially the Big 5 last weekend, the Sports Basement staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Cute, too.

I did not go out for a walk at lunchtime. Partly that's because I was already running late, and partly because my left ankle was -- and still is -- hurting. Hopefully I'll be able to walk this weekend. Grump.

Definitely overdid it on the exercise over the weekend. I'm sore in places I didn't realize I had muscles. Or maybe they're tendons. Not to mention muscles I know damned well I have, but that haven't hurt since the little bit of weight training I did back in college. Not fun.

Managed about ten minutes of walking today at lunchtime. Could have done a little more, but I was running late between meetings. Maybe just as well.

Went out this morning for a walk around the rose garden, with my new running shoes and 2.5 pounds of sand wrapped loosely around each wrist. (They call 'em "5-lb wrist/ankle weights" -- 5 is the total for the pair.) I got a 10-lb set as well, but decided to change only one variable at a time at the end of my legs.

Got about 1 mile -- to the corner across the street from the Rose Garden -- before my arms became too tired to continue pumping the weights. A bit more of a workout than I'm used to, though not quite enough. After about half a trip around the Rose Garden I went back to my old walking pace. The shoes were definitely an improvement, but I still had some shin tightness, so it's safe to assume I'm still doing something wrong.

I was sleepy all afternoon; ended up taking a nap. Oh, and based on what I saw at Play It Again Sports yesterday, there's no way to get any kind of exercise machine into the house. Those things are bloody huge -- even the fold-up treadmill would take up too much space. So I'll be using machines at the gym, if at all.

mdlbear: (healthy_fen)

(Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] healthy_fen.)

I think I cut about 10 minutes off my usual three-mile walk; most of that would have been in the first half, where I was pushing the pace. Pumping the arms felt kind of stupid, but presumably added to the exercise. Tried taking faster but shorter strides; that seems to help. Hip rotation seems to help a lot -- it lets me take slightly longer strides without coming down so hard on the heel. So no shin splints, though I think I came close.

And I think I came closer than usual to getting an aerobic workout, but I don't think I actually got there. I'll have to buy one of those gadgets that measures your pulse electronically; I've never been successful at taking my own pulse.

The Spenco gel insoles that I got yesterday seemed to help, too. The store where I got them, though, was a dreary, depressing place. Hopefully I can find someplace a little more inviting over the weekend where I can buy weights, a pulse monitor, and maybe shoes.

Started out the morning -- well, after the LJ and coffee, anyway -- with a trip downtown to the CA State Board of Equalization, which for some unguessable reason is what they call the place where you register for a sales tax account. Mild screw-up because I'd filled out the wrong form. Apparently I'm not the only one who got the wrong form off their website. Took a little over an hour.

I had my new tweed hat (that I'd bought at Dickens Fair a couple of weeks ago) in my jacket pocket, and it fell out in the office. Unfortunately, I didn't notice until I'd gotten back to my car, up four flights of stairs in the Second and San Carlos garage. Cursing to myself, I quickly dashed back down and up the stairs, in case I'd dropped it there, then got out of the garage, parked at a parking meter, and retraced my steps. Luckily, somebody had found it.

I very nearly skipped my walk, figuring that going up and down four flights of stairs twice probably counted as exercise, but it was a nice day and I felt like walking. I even did the hill both ways.

Got very little done at work in the afternoon. Evening was the annual Golden Bough winter concert. Wonderful, as usual. A 16-year family tradition.

Managed to get out the door only a little after noon today; it was overcast but dry, though it evidently had been raining most of the morning. I did the hill both ways, and took an extra turn around the little artificial lake in the park, which made it a solid hour (to the minute).

Put in about a 40-minute walk today. Put in the nasty hill going out; came back the easy way because it was starting to drizzle. If I'd left at noon instead of helping our sysadmin install some photo-gallery software, I would have stayed completely dry. Left ankle still a bit dodgy.

A sprained ankle has left me reluctant to walk much -- if at all -- for about the last month. This is Not Good, especially since a daily walk is all the exercise I ever get. It finally seems to be on the mend; I got in about a 45-minute walk yesterday, and went all day with no ankle brace today. I think at this point I can probably stop the naproxin and try to get back to daily walking. For the moment, though, I'll stay on level surfaces as much as possible. Don't want to twist it again!
